How Dutch information technology keeps you moving

At first glance, IT and urbanisation have nothing whatsoever to do with each other. However, appearances can be deceiving. You can read all the details in the latest edition of the magazine Made in Holland. Information technology, including, for example, the smart application of geo-information and intelligent traffic management systems, can help people shape their world and maintain a good quality of urban life. There is less and less space in urban environments, which will be home to some 70% of the world’s population by 2050.

The Made in Holland special edition ‘ICT and Mobility´ takes readers on a journey from robust traffic management, via 'new approaches to work' and the advanced technology needed for road pricing, through to Portbase which routes and directs all information in the Port of Rotterdam. The common thread in all these stories is their Dutch origin. The smart and efficient organisation of space, combined with a high quality of life has been second nature to the Dutch for centuries – now bolstered by the intelligent application of IT. It is no coincidence that these technologies made their appearance at the WCIT, as it is the premier event bringing the world together to discuss how IT can be applied to solve social problems such as the impact of urbanisation. Amsterdam was the host of this year’s event.
