New EU Communications Regulatory Group Holds First Meeting
Group to Offer Rulings and Expert Advice on Telecoms Market
The newly-established Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) recently held its first meeting. Comprised of 27 national telecoms lead regulators, BEREC will offer rulings and opinions on market issues.
The group, established last December, will monitor the telecoms market and ensure consistent regulation throughout Europe. BEREC’s main goal will be to ensure fair competition in Europe’s €351 billion single telecoms market.
BEREC will also offer expert opinions on the market, and advise, support and complement the independent work of national telecoms regulators. The group will play a particularly important role in regulatory decisions that affect multiple national markets.
“The establishment of the EU telecoms regulator is an important milestone for telecoms in Europe,” said Viviane Reding, the EU’s Telecoms Commissioner who proposed the creation of BEREC. “The new body will help national telecoms regulators and the European Commission to provide consistent rules and competitive conditions across the EU. This will boost European telecoms services, which are evolving rapidly in areas like mobile internet and can become a major driver of economic recovery in Europe.”
