Top Logistics Institute to be founded in Breda

8 April 2009 | News Release | Innovation Programs

In 2020, the Netherlands wants to be market leader in logistics. As a component of the Logistics and Supply Chains innovation program, a training institute, with an associated campus, will be founded in Breda. Ministers Maria van der Hoeven (Economic Affairs) and Camiel Eurlings (Transport, Public Works and Water Management) announced this on 8 April 2009.

The industry, knowledge institutions and the government are combining their strengths and investing € 67 million. The Ministries of Economic Affairs and Transport, Public Works and Water Management are each investing € 12.5 million of that total.

Five universities (Rotterdam, Delft, Eindhoven, Tilburg and Twente) will form the training institute. Around 30 companies and knowledge institutes have indicated that they will contribute as well. The institute will also conduct research into innovative logistics concepts. This will create a cross-fertilization between (research) institutions and the companies in the logistics sector.

Breda is chosen as the central place for the implementation of the Logistics and Supply Chains innovation program that must put the Netherlands back in number one position in the logistics field.

In this innovation program, parties can present proposals in three areas:

  • joint management of supply chains
  • logistics of after sales
  • control of transport movements between Dutch junctions and the hinterland

The logistics sector represents eight percent of employment in the Netherlands, and is thus an important pillar of the economy.
